Food Plots

wildlife productsThe Heritage Seed staff has extensive experience in the wildlife food plot industry. Hunters are becoming more sophisticated when it comes to food plot products. More and more are realizing that the larger food plot seed brands are overpriced, and the products often under perform. Additionally, a huge percentage of the food plot seed mixes on the market are poorly formulated.

Heritage Seed has developed a high-performing line-up that is the most fairly priced food plot line-up on the market. The product line-up is simple and easy to understand, because it doesn’t need to be complex.

Deer Plot White Clover Perennial Blend

Deer Plot White Clover Perennial Blend is a perennial white clover blend, with some annual clover to provide quick establishment of a high-quality forage. The annual clover eventually dies out over and white clover varieties fill in stand. This product can provide high-quality, high-protein forage for many years if maintained properly. A white clover product is generally the foundation of any serious food plot program because of its quality and long growing season. Deer Plot White Clover Perennial Blend can thrive from the Gulf Coast to Canada and west into the Plains states.

Deer and Bird Annual Food Plot Mix

Deer and Bird Annual Food Plot Mix is a mixture of summer annuals designed to provide attractive habitat and quality nutrition throughout the summer and into the winter.  The mix produces quality browse for deer through much of the antler-growing season and, as the plot ripens in late summer and early fall, seed heads can provide needed carbohydrates (energy) to both deer and birds well into the coldest months.  This mix is heat and drought tolerant and requires full sun.

Seeding Rate: 25 lbs./acre

Soil Type: Light loam-clay; soil pH between 5.5-7.0.

Chicory

Chicory is excellent for tougher soil conditions (lower pH and well-drained soils). It can be planted alone, but a good option for less-than-ideal soils is to mix it with Deer Plot White Clover Perennial Blend. If the clovers can thrive, they will, and if they struggle, the chicory can help fill in the plot.

Seeding Rate: 4 lbs./acre (pure stand), 2-3 lbs./acre (mix)

Soil Type: Adapted to drier soils and full sun; soil pH between 5.0-7.5.

Establishment: 6-8 weeks, planted in spring or fall.

Forage Turnips

Forage turnips provide an excellent option for fall and winter plots, and some wildlife managers prefer to plant them alone. Forage turnips are superior to purple top turnips in the amount of leaf growth they produce, and forage turnips still produce a large root bulb that deer can pull out of the ground and eat.

Seeding Rate: 4 lbs./acre (pure stand), 2-3 lbs./acre (mix)

Soil Type: Adapted to various soils (soils that have some drainage are better) and full sun; soil pH between 5.5-7.5.

Establishment: 4-6 weeks, planted in fall.
